The project “Coming to My Place” is inspired by the expression “coming to my place” when Taiwanese people are inviting their friends to visit their home or workplace, having a nice cup of tea to improve the relationship. Thus, the project “Coming to My Place: International Communication in Artists’ Studio,” which was launched in 2017, invites international artists to stay overnight in studio of Tainan’s local artists. They are welcome to exchange their ideas and in-depth understand each other’s work style, including the media they use, space layout, and the process of brainstorming and so on. Eventually, the outcome will be presented in the form of discussion which is open to the public. Audiences are invited to join the talk and get to know the affinities and differences between the two artists.
Continuing the “Investigation Project of Artists’ Studio” once implemented by Absolute Art Space, we have accumulated interviews and publications of several artists in order to capture the artists’ appearance apart from their works and to seek for the specific status of each artist when working in his/ her studio. Through such connection, we are able to make the audiences comprehend the tripartite relationship among artist- studio- work. Therefore, from the second half of 2017, we went on the investigation to artists’ studio in the great Tainan area; while we invited artists from other countries in Asian and Europe, and stayed overnight in artists’ studio in Tainan for idea-exchanging.
In 2017, visiting artists were from Malaysia, Japan and Australia. For 2018, we invite artists from Hong Kong, Poland and US. In 2019, we invite artists from Vietnam, Korea, Denmark. Through a semi-public dialogue, the two artists who focus on related issues or share the methods in common will discuss in the space where the works are created. They may even compare and contrast the differences between the media and the methods they apply. Compare to gallery space or art museum, direct communication on the site of art production would encourage the artists to share their stories and experiences at ease; moreover, the visitors are able to see the true scene behind the works of art.
