video, 1 chennel installation with mixing materials Edward Relph(geographer) written ‘To be human is to be in a world that is filled with significant place. To be human is to have and to know your place.’ in his book “Place and Placelessness”. This sentence touching me. I’m interested in the relationship of peoples, objects and places. People recognize the places through the experience for their environment (objects and spaces, etc.). Therefore, all the place are full of meaning and memory which are made by people.

First, in the oldest paper factory and in the oldest fabric market of Tainan, I interview with people’s memories on paper and on fabric which are the most often used object in everyday life. The paper factory and the fabric market are the space of life and an industrial site at the same time. I review these dying places. I also discover how many different meaning and memory this place has been storing. And I want to show how many people were worked for producing on a small object (paper or fabric) and how many traces of them that exists in the final production. Secondly, I express symbolically “my place: a place to find peace” like baby’s space. It’s an installation which has the appearance of the house and which is decorated with paper and fabric. For baby’s first experience the world with five senses. The greater parts of these objects are made of paper and fabric; clothes, diaper, towel, blanket, mobile, book, doll, toys, etc. Baby observes closely, tastes and shows a strong attachment to this safe place. This safe place is his/her bed, room or his/her house. We call this place as “my place”. “My place” is full of meaning, memory and imagination. So I want to think about “my place” and “the meaning of my place”. That’s why I’m interested in the relationship of peoples, objects (paper and fabric) and places.

If the place is a basic attribute of human for their exist in the world, and if the place is a source of stability and identity for individuals or groups, it is important that we don’t forget about the way we experience, the way we create and the way we maintain those significant places.
