“Tiao Zhen ,” or record skipping, was undoubtedly a hit in 2013. The song not only took the island by storm with its catchy tune, but also took Taiwanese popular culture to a whole new level. Originally referred to a broken record that skips, “Tiao Zhen” has become known as a technique, which many of today’s advertisements adopt to make stronger impacts on viewers. Just as rap music, once seen as a subculture but now a mainstream in commercials, the success and popularity of “Tiao Zhen” represents a local cultural breakthrough and kicks the habit of mimicking western pop culture.

From the post-martial-law period to the early 1990s, there was a close relationship between art and society in Taiwanese modern art. In mid-1990s, however, art is believed to have entered an era of “frustration,” when artists became self-concerned, no longer devoting themselves to social movements. The artists of this project—Ye Ii Li and Wang Jing Young—stand out from other artists in this generation in a way that, while being seemingly creator-oriented, their art pieces consciously deal with the subject of social phenomena and explore the core of humanity with enthusiasm.Ye Ii Li, graduated from Tainan National University of Arts, Graduate Institute of Plastic Arts, turned her focus from plastic arts to cross-disciplinary creation, the materials and demonstration of which usually combine stereoscopic sculptures, image media and behavioral performance. This exhibition transforms an ordinary art space into an artistic shrine, where imagery of the magic lamp, Eastern goddess, and Western fairies are involved. The combination of these elements demonstrates the chaotic values as well as the perceived astonishment as a result of globalization in the postmodern world.

Wang Jing Young, graduated from National Taiwan University of Arts, Department of Fine Arts, is adept at director photography and image editing. His works features Otaku , and creates a surreal personal playground by using a bunch of colorful toys and young innocent female figures as material. This fantasy world reflects a strategy where modern people try to seek an outlet for life through individual illusion and imagination. Joy and lightness set the tone for both Ye’s and Wang’s creative works. Their artistic vocabulary is flooded with fun of “Tiao Zhen,” with which we are able to “see through” social reality. Ye and Wang are critical but not cynical. They are hilarious but not pretentious. Their efforts and achievements have surpassed the success of “Like Button” designed for Facebook, and have responded to a popular local saying for admiration, “Jiao Wo Jie Jie!”
