In fact, my residency in Tainan isn’t very long. If I am asked to use a sentence to describe my impression of Tainan, I will say Tainan is a city melded with artificialness and nature. On the streets a lot of traces of demolition can be seen on buildings. Plants thrive in the cracks on man-made buildings. For the old trees in the lanes, people have their own ways of making use of the nature in city; for communities, beneath old trees is a sacred place, a shade for the locals to do gymnastics, and meanwhile, a shelter for the homeless. There is no clear line between man’s way of life and nature. Instead, they mix sophisticatedly, which makes Tainan a city with a unique stance.
In “Ecosystem of Objects –Tainan,” I collected many artificial and natural objects as material for my installation. These objects have different levels of connection with places. With my micro-electricity, objects become one of the fields in my work. The effect of electric field generates slight sound or movement among these objects, which highlights the contour of power’s existence and unseals the relation networks of objects and other things.
Objects become the loop of power circulation, occupying the space for the time being. I intend to take you, the viewer, into this sensation field of power circulation. Besides, through this attempt, I no longer naively reproduce/represent Tainan, but depict the unique stance of the place from your sensation.
