One can easily calculate the shortest distance from A to B with coordinates in length and width. Usually a straight line, this is the fastest, invariant path in two-dimensional space. In this elementary school math problem, there is always a starting point connected to an end point at the other side of the test. However, in the real world, it is not all rosy. You are on the journey once you decide to establish an art space regardless of the course, which is never a linear, smooth path. Where shall we go? Is there only one end? The only way forward is creating events, exhibitions and forums in real space. “From A to...” is a constant inquiry posed by Absolute Space for the Arts and many other art spaces: Where are we going from here? As we advance from one place to another, we seldom consider the rhythm between our steps. This repetition seldom emerges, so perhaps zebra crossing is a way to recall its pace. When you cross the street on a zebra crossing, the white lines suggest we march to the beat, an automatic pulse emanates in our stride. This exhibition ruminates on the endless possibilities that are produced in strides. What is created in the process, and what remains? With each event and exhibition as bridge and passage, what have we retained as viewers and artists?

“From A to...” exhibits the work of three artists: Tung Fu-chi revisits cities from his travels in On The Street, replacing his feet with a cursor, filming a strange but familiar travel map. Chen Yen-Yi creates works in her own city, documenting countless surveillance cameras that occupy the streets of Taiwan, monitoring pedestrians and traffic. Li Cheng-Liang constructs the words “hello” and “bye bye” in flour on a two-way street in the video Hello or Bye Bye, while passing vehicles annihilate the text, imparting that we are bound to widen the distance between us with our fast-paced lives. The roads in these works are not only passages, traveling “from A to...”, but a reminder that there must be more in the journey. In addition to works from artists, “From A to...” also includes remnants since the inception of Absolute Space for the Arts, documents and objects that have remained between exhibitions and events. These remains, available for purchase, include sketches created in our discussions with artists, exhibition documents and event posters, etc. Paper is continuously attached to the memory of the space, but also as easily cast off in the deepest drawer of a cabinet. We will showcase these residues in the exhibition, as the roads we have taken. The files in storage and drawers are roads themselves. “From A to...” conjures an unfinished heritage site, an archive of passing, a road into the unknown which we have already embarked on.
