‖ Statement by Curator Huang De-Xin
The exhibition “Dissolving Dimensions” takes spatial experience, perceptual structures, and the imagery of our times as its point of departure, exploring how human perception is continually permeated and restructured by media within the contemporary condition of technological acceleration and cultural interlacing. Rather than presenting a single representation of spatial form, the exhibition reveals how artists, through practices involving audio-visual media, photography, and sound, render perception as a dynamic and generative process.
In this exhibition, the two artists each unfold their own explorations of “perceptual events”:
• Yamamoto Tao – 555 bugs
The sound changes in real time as viewers approach, obscure, or move around the work. These sounds originate from cold electronic circuits, yet through the audience’s intervention they acquire an almost organic rhythm. The work entangles the body within the circuit, transforming the viewer from a mere observer into part of the sound’s generation, revealing an ambiguous “intermediate state” between the animate and the inanimate.
• Hayashi Tomohiro – Listening to What Cannot Be Seen
By juxtaposing simultaneously captured photographs and recordings, static images are activated by the temporality of sound. Between seeing and listening, the viewer does not merely encounter representation, but a world continuously assembled and reconfigured within perception. The interweaving of image and sound makes us aware that perception itself is unstable—an ongoing, generative process.
From Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s perspective on “embodied perception,” perception is not a passive input but an experience generated through the interaction of body and world. Yamamoto’s installation reveals how the body participates in the creation of objects and sound, while Hayashi’s work demonstrates how image and sound are continually reassembled within perception. Both place the viewer at the very core of “perceptual generation.”
Furthermore, these works can be understood as a kind of “container”: not a closed vessel, but a circulating interface that constantly exchanges, absorbs, and releases perceptual experiences within finite boundaries. Such a container is not only touched by its environment but also actively generates new perceptual orders in response. The exhibition thus becomes a perceptual site within spatial dimensions—dissolving clear boundaries and situating the viewer within a philosophical inquiry: When the body is understood as a circulating container, how might we, in contemporary society, rethink the relationship between existence and perception?
