The exhibition Formidable is based on the series Célébration. With the aestheticism of local folk religion as reference, this exhibition is based on the cultural context and folk beliefs within the artist’s family and his hometown Tunggang. Through a long term field study and participation in the King Boat Festival, the artist has looked back and retraced the silhouettes, patterns, and colors within folk art. From there, He took the wishes of normal people and symbols of their spirituality, rearranging and restructuring them into paintings and various visual images. Through bridging the aestheticism between now and then, Huang has responded to the contemporary ideologies considering painting, form, and expression. By exploring various possibilities, Huang Chih-Wei is seeking a way to reach out to the unknown territories in the painting field.
