The 20th anniversary exhibition of the Singaporean art space INSTINC, titled “INSTINC 20: ‘lub-dub, lub-dub’,” will move to Tainan in November after its initial showing in Singapore. Inspired by the onomatopoeia ‘lub-dub,’ this exhibition extends the unique and rhythmic pulsations of the heartbeat to explore the impact and energy of artists' reflections and expressions in contemporary society.
Just as blood nourishes every cell, art enriches society, weaving connections and fostering dialogue. Contemporary aesthetics reflect the eternal tension of life’s rhythms—both positive and negative—mirroring the diverse backgrounds, creative thoughts, and practices of the participating artists. In contemporary art, the heartbeat symbolizes the harmony between humanity and nature, revealing their interconnectedness and aspiring towards a balanced state of Zen.
This exhibition is curated by INSTINC Space founder Yeo Shih Yun and curator Patrice Chou, featuring twenty contemporary artists from Taiwan, Singapore, Japan, the United States, Germany, Spain, and Hong Kong. The exhibition is divided into three parts: Artbeat (the heartbeat of art), Versatilepulse (the diverse pulse), and Cadencedcanvas (the rhythmic canvas). The first part captures the essence of life's pulsation, celebrating the spirit of creativity; the second reflects the multifaceted nature of the heartbeat and the diversity of artistic expression; and the third symbolizes the flow of life’s rhythm and the traces of the artist’s creative process.
At the intersection of new media and multidimensional perspectives, INSTINC Space hopes that “INSTINC 20: ‘lub-dub, lub-dub’” pays tribute to the past twenty years, focuses on the present, and looks forward to the future, embodying the spirit of international cultural exchange and contemporary artistic dialogue. Contemporary art, like the relentless beat of a heart, guides humanity towards a more inclusive and enlightening society. Behind all the works lies the infinite interplay of heartbeat sounds between the audience and the artists, weaving the purest melody in the world—‘lub-dub, lub-dub.’
