The imaginary scenes and plots in sci-fi movies can either be based on scientific concepts or pure fantasy. Both stimulate the brain and mind of their audience with images of the future. It is even more fanciful to witness these scenes taking place in the real world as technology changes every detail of life. Looking back to the development of information technology, in a matter of less than two decades we have stopped flipping through dictionaries and printed maps as these have been replaced with screens consisting of pixels. Today, we now understand the world through the internet.

The exhibition Pixel Extension is a perceptual loop made of three artworks. Through the image perceptions of AI, I try to reason out the reciprocal interplay between subjective sensory preference and the AI technology in our everyday life.

The concept of the first art piece “Removal of the Moon” originates from the AI theme panel feature in a smartphone. The AI seems to be capable of detecting my preference and provided me with a set of moonlit night sceneries. I tried to cover the moon in one of the pictures and fed it back to the AI system. To my surprise, the system was still capable of categorizing the retouched image into the same moonlit night theme. As I stared in awe, I found the retouched image to be less appealing than the original picture. Therefore, in this art piece, I hollowed the moon in the original picture and put a black sphere behind the emptied hollow to block the white wall behind, creating a crescent crevice in between. In doing so, I have explored the root of my preference and the AI perceptions in my imagination.

After I “removed” the moon, in my second piece “How to Elevate the Quality of a Picture Through the Use of AI– A Tutorial on Noise Reduction and Super Resolution,” I simulated a self-media style of tutorial video on image editing by using the “Pale Blue Dot” photoed by Voyager 1 space probe as a demonstration for upgrading photo quality through adopting the new noise reduction and super resolution technologies. The AI system detected the earth as a noise, and “removed” the earth just like I emptied the moon to create the crescent crevice. As the earth was removed, a new set of pixels were detected. Under its algorithmic principle, the result has fallen within my expectation. To a certain extent, it also feels like the AI system’s triumphant hurrah for precisely nailing my preference.

The third piece “The Extended Footsteps” is a customized four-storeyed aluminum stairway installed at the farest end of the gallery. The stairs go from 30 cm to a leap above human height to symbolize the accelerating development of human civilization. Since I am only capable of linear thinking, it is impalpable for me to imagine anything further than the aluminum stairway. All I can do is to look up to the unknown and wait patiently for the wheel of time to turn in acceleration as we live in a technological normality.
