Statement

by Lin Yi-Kuan

Memory is interwoven with personal experience and perception. Fleeting moments vanish in an instant, yet emotions continue to accumulate or recede over time. The carrier of memory becomes a compiling platform where additions and deletions coexist.

In That-Has-Been, Cheng An-Li’s 2026 solo exhibition at Absolute Space for the Arts, the textile-based artist explores the transformative potential of materials. The integration of text into textile structures, opening up multiple layers of meaning and interpretation.

In recent years, she has worked as an interpreter for Absolute Space for the Arts. Notes taken in both Chinese and English are transferred onto organza, cut apart, and woven together. As the text is fragmented and obscured, its original meanings shift into new formations. Layers of translucent organza partially reveal and conceal the words, inviting viewers to explore ambiguity and multiple readings.

Lightweight and portable, paper and textiles have long served as materials for recording and preserving history throughout human civilization. How these functions may be transformed in the age of artificial intelligence remains difficult to predict.

Cheng An-Li is drawn to the stable order of everyday objects and takes a particular interest in overlooked, ordinary things. Many works in That-Has-Been are made from materials once used by Absolute Space or collaborating artists. Circulating through different contexts, these objects carry traces of time and use.

Through subtle textile techniques, Cheng gently reworks these familiar materials into forms that appear both recognizable and unfamiliar. Each object's previous presence is woven into a small history of encounters, where everyday experiences intersect between self and others.
